Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” - John 11:35-36
The New International Version translates John 11:35 simply as, “Jesus wept”. This is a favorite verse of confirmation for students who must pick a verse to memorize. Two very descriptive, powerful words. It is a powerful reference to the actions of Jesus as it highlights His compassion and deep connection to those He loved. It also highlights the visceral humanity of the personhood of Jesus as well as the profound impact of grief and loss.
It is easy to brush this sadness off, or explain it away. But I think that the writers of the Gospels (at least John) were intent on helping us to see that Jesus, Son of God, was also truly human, with all the joys and sorrows, strengths and foibles.
When have you been in a place where you have been overcome with grief? When have you had the brave space to be able to show your emotion in grief?
Peace, Pastor Erin
