It is very easy for righteous anger to become “unrighteous”.  Although anger in itself is not a sin, acting upon your anger, in many circumstances, can be.  Stewing in anger and becoming embittered by anger can blow a situation out of proportion in our minds.  Sitting with anger longer than a day can cause deep rifts in a relationship and more likely cause us to sin.  The longer we percolate in our anger the more likely we are to sin.   It is better for us to find ways to let it go if we can.

Unlike righteous anger, unrighteous anger seeks to hurt.  It does not care about the person that the anger is directed toward.  Even if we have the best intentions, sinful anger opposes love, kindness and respect.

So for as difficult as it may be, we are called to find the ways of healthy communication.  Again - anger is not a sin.  We must be aware that anger is not the seed of righteousness.  When we are angry it helps us to be intentional about noting our own position.

Righteous anger thinks first of the other, ignites our care for others, takes into account the sinner, rather than the sin.  Righteous anger does not seek to hurt, but to listen and react in love.

It is hard work - but well worth the effort.

Peace, Pastor Erin
