I used to read this text and wonder, “how can salt lose its saltiness?”  That really just does not happen, but the purity of salt can change.  If salt is mixed with other elements, like other minerals, or plant life, the taste of the salt becomes diluted, and the salt itself becomes less useful and in the end, useless.

The disciples (and we) risk hanging on to our saltiness when we allow the values of the world (i.e. power authority, position) to suppress the purified saltiness that God has created in us.

Another way to think about this proclamation is to make note that “saltiness” is actually the PURPOSE of salt.  It is  the defining characteristic of that mineral.  If one loses something so central to one’s identity how can it be restored?  “Have salt in yourselves” is a reminder of WHO and WHOSE we are.  It suggests that as followers of Christ we should see our role in the kin-dom of God as crucial, NOT secondary.

How we treat one another, how we care for one another, how we bring out the better nature of one another, will result in a greater peace around us.

Our ability to bring out the peace in our circles and the best in others is an indicator of the purity of our saltiness.  A tribute to who we are as people of God.

How do you stay salty?

Peace, Pastor Erin
